Dead Period:

From Mon, 7/15 thru Sun, 7/21, we will be in a dead period. There will be NO basketball activity during this time.

Our next open gym is on Tue, 7/23.

NCHSAA Coaches Clinic:

This week (Mon, 7/15), I’ll be attending the NCHSAA Coaches Clinic in Greensboro, NC.

During coach’s clinic, there will be networking, basketball workshops and sessions for new general rules and regulations.

Afterwards, all coaches attending will be certified for the year.

Focus of Details:

Being a great basketball player requires paying attention to details.

If you’re working on shooting the basketball, position feet shoulder-width apart, tuck elbow, bend knees and place basketball in shot-pocket. The focus should not be on makes or misses. Shot accuracy is a byproduct of properly executed details.

If you’re drilling on-ball defense, focus on having low stance, perform shuffle/slide/drop step techniques and “turn” ball handler. Again, the focus shouldn’t be on stealing/deflecting basketball or overwhelming offensive player. The focus should be on executing proper on-ball defensive techniques. By doing this correctly, everything else will take care of itself (more times than not).

These are two examples of focusing on details. You can apply this mindset to every aspect of basketball (fundamental skill development, learning team sets, making self-corrective adjustments, etc.).

Truth be told, if you focus on and master the “nuanced” details, you’re going to be a great basketball player.

Effective Offensive Basketball:

An effective offensive basketball team employs a systematic approach that will consistently yield high percentage shots.

Unfortunately, most teams don’t do this. Instead, teams rely too much on “individual” talent to save the day. This “individual” talent jacks up 3’s, tries to create by dribbling too much or adopts the “I got to get mine” mentality.

In my opinion, this stinks. Over the long haul, if we did this, our team offense would suffer.

The best way to consistently get high percentage shots is two-fold: have a fundamentally-sound offense and make opposing team play defense for at least 15 seconds (unless layup or drive-and-kick opportunity is available).

We’re definitely going to have fundamentally-sound offenses. Your job (as a player) is to be patient and make the defense play defense for at least 15 seconds.

By doing this, we’ll be an effective offensive team.
